The R J Young Scholarship was created under the terms of the will of the late Richard James Young. Scholarships are awarded annually by the Trustee on recommendations from the Council of the University of Ballarat.
Applicants must be enrolled in either a certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma course at the SMB Campus. Preference will be given to applicants who are employees or children of employees of Pasminco Port Pirie Smelter (formerly Broken Hill Associated Smelters). Selection is based on financial circumstances, academic performance, commitment to educational achievement, and objectives of study. Tenure is dependent on satisfactory academic progress.
The scholarship is valued at $4,000, paid in 2 instalments. Recipients may also be eligible for a living allowance.
