Gates Cambridge Scholarships are offered in all subjects currently available at the university. The approved courses of study are full-time residential courses of study as follows: research leading to the PhD degree; 1-year postgraduate courses; MSc or MLitt; and MBBChir in Clinical Studies. The scholarship is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Candidates for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship may come from any country in the world except the United Kingdom. A Gates Cambridge Scholarship can only be taken up by a student who has been admitted to Cambridge through the university's normal academic procedures. Consequently, applicants must meet the academic criteria for admission specified by the university. In general, all candidates must have, or expect to obtain before beginning study in Cambridge, an honours bachelor degree, or its equivalent, from a recognised university. In selecting Gates Cambridge Scholars, the Trust looks for students of exceptional academic achievement and scholarly promise for whom advanced study at Cambridge would be particularly appropriate.
The scholarships cover: all approved university and college tuition fees; a maintenance allowance of approximately GBP12,500; 1 return economy airfare between the UK and the scholar's normal country of residence; and a discretionary contribution towards the costs of supporting dependants at Cambridge (upon application).
