The scholarships were established as part of the University of Newcastle Awards for Academic Excellence. The purpose of the scholarship is to support an academically excellent Year 12 student intending to enrol at the University of Newcastle in the year following their studies.
Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate program in the year immediately following graduation from high school, and be nominated by a high school qualifying for the Regional and Rural Preference Scheme. Selection is based on academic merit as nominated by the high school.
The scholarship provides a one-off payment of $2,000.
