Applicants must: be Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents; hold a bachelor degree with first-class (H1) honours or equivalent; have not completed a degree at the same level or higher than that of the award; not be receiving another award or scholarship that provides a greater benefit than 75 per cent of the Hackett Postgraduate Research Scholarship; and be eligible to enrol upon commencement of their full-time award (or, in exceptional circumstances, a part-time award). Selection is based on academic merit and research potential (based on academic referee reports, relevant research experience and publications).
The scholarship provides a stipend of $35,000 per year for full-time study (2011 rate). It also provides: a travel allowance of up to $5,000 for overseas research; a relocation allowance if the applicant must move between Australian cities to take up the award (economy airfare between Australian cities for applicant, spouse and dependents and removal expenses of up to $600 per adult and $250 per child to a maximum of $1,700); and a thesis allowance (claimed within 12 months of completing the thesis with production of receipts valued at up to $420 for a master and $840 for a PhD).
